It's been a while since I talked here about my Seasonal Color Analysis Quiz. But I used it myself just the other day. I was trying to determine the color season of a male friend of mine, but I didn't have my drapes with me, and I was stuck between a couple of seasons. On my phone, I went to my own quiz and took it on his behalf; lo and behold, the answer I came up with turned out to be correct.
I think my quiz is the most accurate quiz available online. Unlike most color analysis quizzes, this quiz doesn't depend on a person's hair, eye, or skin tone - since none of those factors can tell a person's season. Instead, you'll be asked about colors that flatter or don't flatter the person in question. The quiz is best used by you on a celebrity or a friend, but you can use it to determine your own season if you ask a friend to take it for you. Two notes on the quiz: 1. I do not include color images in this quiz, and here's why: If I include a picture, the person taking the quiz will naturally answer Yes or No based on the picture, not on the color name. And I can't control how pictures appear on other people's monitors. Someone taking the quiz for a True Spring might choose No for a picture of bright yellow-green if it doesn't appear as a True Spring bright yellow-green on her monitor. So a picture, I fear, might define the color too narrowly. By contrast, any Springs, and many Winters, will probably get a Yes for the term "bright yellow-green," even though each quiz taker may have a slightly different mental image of that color, because the quiz-taker can picture some bright yellow-greens that flatter them. 2. Don't take my Yes/No paths as endorsements of particular colors for particular seasons. I have built the quiz based on how I think people may answer, not on what I think actually looks good on them. For example, I wouldn't recommend any color called "hot pink" for a True Autumn, but a person can answer Yes for hot pink and still reach TA - because I'm guessing that some people will think their TA friend looks good in hot pink. (Because that TA friend probably looks good in some colors that are pretty similar to hot pink, because some of the TA colors are kind of similar to hot pink.) A version of this post was first published in February of 2014.

Thank you for letting me try the quiz! My husband answered and got true winter for me, but I don't think that's a contender for my season. :) So I answered truthfully and got a couple of seasons that have been suggested for me: dark autumn and bright spring. I really want an analysis someday so I know what direction to go in. I'm finding myself hesitating to go buy any new clothes. :)

Thank you for creating this! There are no analysts in the 12 season system in my country, but after about 2 years of research and trying on colours and self analysis I believe I have figured out my season. And after doing the quiz for myself I came out BSp - which is exactly right. Well done, this is amazing!

Hi Rachel, This is a very good idea! :D At first I answered the question about white with no and I got true spring (I am a light summer), but then I thought: I do look good in white, but just not 'very bright' white (which is which I associate with pure/true white). Then I got light summer. Maybe you can specify that a bit?

Jup, works great. I'm DA and that's what it says. I answered it for myself, but I tried to stay in a pre-draping mind and said yes to the black. Which is a half-truth only, but to the untrained eye, I do look fabulous in black.

I've been draped BSp, and that's what I got, going against the instructions to see how this works :-) This was useful to me because it really made me pay attention to all the basic colours out there in the shops that I CAN'T wear: black, white, beige, burgundy...but once I tried to use this with a friend in mind I got stuck, not being able to imagine just how she'd look in beige...I guess it's best done with the person there & some basic colours they can try on! Cleverly designed, though!

I think the question about warm dusty pink is misleading...I am a draped SSu, and I look good in COOL dusty pink. When I think of warm dusty pink I think of SA, so I answered no when it asked if I looked good in it, because SSu is a cool neutral season.

I think it will be easier to answer if there is a square with a color next to its name. For example I can't imagine what sort of deep burgundy do you have in your mind (the darker one or this one closer to terracotta).

Rachel, I did try the quiz again. I got LSp. I have not been draped though. Then again, if I choose no for the true white question and keep my answers yes for questions about warm colors, I get TSp. I feel I am a bit between the seasons though since with clothing colors I seem to be able to handle the saturation and the warmth of TSp colors (something it feels like LSp colors are unwhelming on me - I have fairly neutral-looking skin, lightish hazel eyes and light to medium brown hair) but when it comes to make-up I need LSp colors. Is it possible for some people to need clothing colors from one palette and make-up colors from another palette?

Rachel, I did try the quiz again. This time I was able to complete the quiz. I get LSp or TSp, depending on how I answer the answer about true white. What did you mean when you asked if the person looks healthy and alive in true white? Debbie: I know exactly what you are talking about being between two seasons. One time is comes up Soft Autumn and the other is True Spring. I am too light skinned to be a True Spring and I have a pinkness to my skin, making me a cool or a neutral. I think I am sticking with the Soft Autumn. There needs to be more questions with this "color quiz". It seems to be too general.

Hi FrancesB, I read your comments, thinking how alike our responses were. I can wear black, but rarely do now as it ages me a bit, I can wear pumpkin orange, but feel its a bit too in your face, I love burgundy, but not all shades are equal. I draped as a dark autumn years ago, but with age got it done again and came out a bright spring (which don't agree with as most of the colours are too bright for me). My husband did the quiz for me and got me as a true autumn, and I got the same response. I live in khaki, moss and evergreen tones, as well as burgundy and always tan shoes and boots. It sounds as if I have changed to true autumn with time (I can also wear some, but not all, soft autumn shades).

When you're getting down to these fine distinctions of color - cold turquoise vs. warm turquoise - , I don't think words are really enough to accurately talk about the palettes.

I have been trying to figure myself out, and I'm having trouble. I am definitely bright, but I don't know if I am a spring or a winter. The problem is that my hair is either v. light brown or v. dark blonde. But I am very high contrast--very dark at the base of my eyelashes, dark eyebrows, dark shadows on face and very light in my cheeks and the whites of my eyes.

In theory, a person could have light hair and be a Bright Winter. I have not personally seen it; the lightest-haired Bright Winter I've seen has medium-brown hair. But Christine Scaman writes about a blonde True Winter on her site, so I think a blonde Bright Winter is theoretically possible.

I tried again (true autumn getting true spring), now all good. I did not get true autumnbecause I said no to burgundy... If I type yes, then I get true autumn... (if I type no for burgundy and then no for BRIGHt yellow green, then its soft autumn and if yes with the bright yellow green, then true spring...) so I think its the burgundy that is the problem. if this is burgundy, its warm and ok on an autumn http://www.art-paints.com/Paints/Airbrush/House-of-Kolor/Kandy-Basecoats/Burgundy/Burgundy.gif, but I think many people think of burgunbdy being a blueish and cooler deep red like this... http://www.art-paints.com/Paints/Gouache/Jo-Sonja/Burgundy/Burgundy.gif

I am a Summer, but I can't wear hot pink because it is a bit too bright for me. But when I answer "no" for this color then my result is "True Spring" what is wrong. May be "soft pink" would be better than "hot pink" in the quiz.

Hi Rachel, I think this is great! I keep playing with it to see where all of the answers take you. I am still settled in TSum and I kept getting SSum at first because I wasn't saying 'yes' to the pure white. Before my draping, I would have said yes, but when draped I saw a 'true white' which was the winter white and it was overwhelming on me (too bright and blue), so that's what I now think of as pure white, with the TSum white being a soft white. Maybe you could distinguish between these two somehow? xx

Now it has changed. When I say "yes" to bluegray, but "no" to all the other colors then I get "True Autumn" instead of Summer. From all the colors in the test blue-gray is the only one I can wear. Deep burgundy and hot pink are a bit too deep/to strong for me.

As a draped BW "pure black" (interpreted as solid black and no color blocks/accents) isn't a "healthy and alive" look for me compared to what I know brings out the healthiest in me so I answered no and got BSp. I know it is flawed to do it for yourself, and a friend has told me black is a good color for me when I rarely wore it before draping, I'm not so dark as to obviously fit into winter and wear black intuitively.

it works. if I choose "no" for burgundy, its soft autumn, if "yes", warm autumn, which is right. IF people know that burgundy is a deep toasted warm red, then all is good. if they think ist a blueish deep wine red, then not. that was my mistake, that I thought burgundy is a cool tone. I did not know that it can be warm also. I dont think, that a color newbe knows when yellwo green is a bright yellow green (I look good in yellwo green as warm autumn but NOT in bright y<ellow green). but a color newbe is lost anyway. he can read your blog and would soon learn enough to do it right then :-)

That is pretty amazing! I did it for myself, but I used feedback from family members about how colors look on me. And I am confident it gave me the right answer: Bright Spring. Now if only I could have all those years back from CMB, whose analysis told me I was an Autumn!
Reply
I was told by a consultant that I was a True Spring. Those clothing colors are too bright for me as I have muted red hair, green/yellow eyes and a very light golden coloring with a pink undertone. ( making me a neutral coloring) I took this quiz myself and came out a Soft Autumn. I contacted another consultant and she told me by the description of my coloring that I was in between the seasons of Summer and Autumn making me a Soft Autumn. I can wear either peach or warm pink lipstick and blush. Also I can wear the color palettes from both seasons depending on the strength of the colors. Taking this quiz for myself many times, no matter what answers I give I am classified as a "Soft Autumn". As far as I can see, this quiz is correct. I have been studying about color analysis quite a bit lately and I am beginning to understand the concept of it. Thank you for letting me share my story.

Rachel—I’ve draped myself with your color cards and clearly came out as a True Winter—every other season made me look tired and washed out—but every time I take the quiz, I come out as a Dark Winter because I answer no to the white question. Nobody likes pure white on me—I think it’s because large blocks of pure white don’t offer enough contrast for my Snow White-like coloring? I personally prefer blue-white, though that’s nearly impossible to find. You might consider adjusting the quiz to account for TWs who can’t carry lots of white.

I'm sorry to go against the "official" instructions, but I really do believe the quiz is more accurate if you do it yourself ;) Several reasons for this: 1) commenters here tend to know a lot more about colour than the average person, 2) at least my nearest & dearest tend to think I look good in every colour, so it's not very reliable ;) (A bit like KC wrote above, as is the following point), and 3) the other person's personal bias about colours will greatly affect the result (i.e. they often want to see you in colours *they* like, but are not that good for you actually).

Rachel, I truely believe this quiz to be amazingly accurate - thank you for all the work you put into creating it, which is much appreciated. I also appreciate (as someone trained in art and design) how difficult it is to plan for the various bias, i.e how people see themselves - they may just think they look good in a colour, because they like that colour; how a particular colour is named - people may read that differently; friends and family may be influenced by what looks good on themselves or colour they particularly favour, etc, etc. I have found the quiz to be as accurate as personal draping (better than one draping that got me completely wrong). I also had your style advise a few years ago and now live happily as a romantic/dramatic/natural/true autumn, which feels completely me. So, from the bottom of my heart, a huge thank you for your attention to detail and all the careful, thoughtful, advice to give to myself and plenty of others.

Found an interesting quirk in the quiz - one can get Bright Spring by choosing "not overwhelmed by black", but Bright Winter by choosing "overwhelmed by black"! (That starts a long & winding path, but the end result for me there was BW.) Somehow that goes against intuition - shouldn't BW be *more* tolerant of black than BSp, not less? But very intriguing, anyway. ;)

This test is very simple but very accurate. I draped out as an Autumn by a CMB consultant in the 80's. I have been doubting that assessment because the colors were too intense for the most part...and too warm. Soft Autumn is just right. Our colors are muted but rich looking. Thanks for confirming for me.
