Yay! Calc was so helpful! I remember in the middle of using it thinking to myself, “Man I’m so glad I invested in this”.

Rachel, would you mind adding some pins to the REG board? My board hasn’t been updated in over a year! I had to use the pins from other boards you recently updated (like REI and RNG) for more inspo. We REG-ers could use some love too :)

I used this to decide I was an RNG, and low and behold, when I got a professional analysis done in another system, that was exactly what I was analyzed as (though it used different names). This works very well, so long as you follow the instructions. :)

It's not easy in some cases to choose the best style for self - let's look at Ethereal Dramatic - there are only evening dresses. How can someone decide if this is proper style if there is no formal examples. Do ED's wear jeans? That makes ED the least explained style. And it always bothers me: how does Rachel or other Ethereals make their hair when jogging? It's not possible to have loose hair all day, it's uncomfortable and in some situations looks very inappropiate.

I relate a lot to this--probably my biggest issue with style analysis right now is that my ID is formal--RDE--and I feel like it often looks inappropriate to look my "best."

I'm trying to accept that it's not possible--or necessary--to look your best all the time. I try to make my workout gear somewhat fit my style ID--tight black pants for dramatic, red/pink fitted top for romantic--but sneakers are just never going to be fully RDE. And there are plenty of instances when I'm too tired/rushed to do full RDE outfit, makeup, jewelry, or when I don't because I think I would look overdone for the occasion. For me, I think style ID is partly about compromise--realizing that you can't always look your absolute best in all situations but that you can typically look at least somewhat harmonious, and learning to be ok with that.

Re: do ED's wear jeans? A few months ago I got rid of all of my blue jeans. I don't regret it. If I need/want to wear pants, I typically wear black pants of some sort, anything from dress pants to leggings. That's not to say that I don't think RDE's shouldn't wear jeans, but just that I don't feel the need or desire to have them in my wardrobe, given that there options that are just as comfortable/functional that I think look better on me.

I relate to this. In this system, I am probably a eci or cgi (classic and ingenue for sure, then some ethereal and perhaps some gamine) and I really don't like basic blue jeans. I am also a soft autumn (in this system) or borderline warm & delicate/cool & delicate in artistic license from merriam style so those bright and dark blues are a no for me. If they were nicely evenly coloured, fine. I don't dislike the shape of jeans, but I don't like the bleached, blue look. Some tears ruin it completely: it just doesn't go with my sweet, classic looking facial features and aura. I really wish coloured jeans in all shapes and sizes were more of a thing.

Megan and Oasis, it's definitely about compromise as far as staying true to your type but also making your look functional. My style ID isn't that great for formal occasions, but that's where I say screw it and add some classic in addition to my other types. I figure as long as I have the knowledge of how to use my type to my advantage and I'm not wearing something way "off" for me (like RDE!), who cares if I look exactly NGI at all times? Probably not worth the time and effort in my opinion. ;)

That's what I love about style and color analysis-- a person has the know-how on what looks best on her, but she also gets to choose how and when to use it!

I don't agree Janelle. I know there are proper formal examples because I have found them.The main issue here is the fact that it's not easy or impossible to choose ED when doing style calculator because there is no formal interpretation. I'm writing this because that was the reason I made mistake and didn't choose my style. After months I came into conclusion I'm ED, but it wasn't calculator but other people's pinterests.
What I try to say it's that the ED interpretation in Rachel's pinterest is not very legible (in my opinion).
Megan, I totally understand you :), blue jeans are good only for Naturals, I guess.

OK. So, why do people consider this type of beauty guides undiscriminating? Useful. Definitely. Fun to explore? For most people, yes. But undiscriminating? This is a guide that tells you to wear styles that have a specific vibe. This is extremely limiting and does not remotely take a person's taste into account. What about people that don't like any of their potential style ids?They can't be well-dressed according to this guide. Styles have vibes and based on that you are barring people from a lot of potential choices. This guide is very critical of not dressing for your id or season. Celebs that have unique styles are criticized for being themselves. On the soft autumn page you are complaining about Adele's eyeliner. Seriously? Miley Cyrus hasn't lost her true self because she has dyed her hair.You criticized Lady Gaga's look in a blog post. It's awkward to talk about inclusiveness and criticize artistic choices.

You have also named some of your categories awkwardly. Like DG is The Punk Rocker. There's no connection between punk and this style unless, of course, the wearer wants to. It's a misnomer. Punk is a music-based subculture. And that not the only one. Seriously, given that you care so much about being true for yourself you'd be worried that someone could call one of your more confused clients a poser. Sure, that's not nice. But subcultures are also kinda' fake-inclusive.

Which get me to my two last points. Connecting style to vibes can become very limiting real quick when a person realizes there is no way her id can replicate anything she finds inspiring and connects too. Even if a person loves her style, she may not want to embrace it full-time. Say she is REI. Maybe she loves Dramatic suits and has always wanted one. Maybe she needs to go a festival or concerts and wants to look as crazy and bad*** as possible. This are all facets of herself and it makes sense to showcase them.

People aren't necessarily true when they follow your advice. I use guides like this because I have no fashion sense and need to quell anxiety. I haven't really gained a dime of confidence from it. I just gained some sort of color OCD.

Rachel’s doing a service to people who seek to create a look that harmonizes with their facial features. I’m a Natural Ingenue and have a very sweet face but an awful mouth, I can dress to suit my pricklier side if I want, but that’s not what the site is about? It does what it says on the tin. If you disagree with it, why not go elsewhere? There’s nothing not inclusive about describing what creates visual harmony. Gaga’s teal hair is specifically not a harmonious choice. It’s poppy and dramatic and that’s literally the point. Why would it be recommended on a site that prioritizes a harmonious look? It would be lucky, but UNUSUAL for a person’s whole personality and vibe to match their face. How can you expect a person to begin to synthesize a stranger’s whole personality and consciousness into a Pinterest board, baby? Just use something else if this doesn’t satisfy you. 😂
